WALTER VAN BEIRENDONCK 05 / 06: "WEIRD"
Walter's winter 2005 / 2006 collection is all about the contrast and thin line between fantasy and reality, how weird that is, how weird the world is and how full of weirdos. As Walter shows us how it works, our jaws drop in astonishment and we say wow. Balloon butterflies float of into fantasy, balloon machine guns and bombs remind us of everyday harsh reality. Red stands for blood and fire inside, green is the colour of hope and the grass on which hedgehogs and butterflies would love to meet . Tribes from across the world merge as Basotho and Masai from Africa headhunt the Burmese Naga and ancient Vikings from Scandinavia.
To protect ourselves from the all-seeing and omnipresent eyes, we wear chatkas that have got faces on the back and Sotho blankets with fighter plane prints.

Headhunting:the practice among some peoples of collecting the heads of dead enemies as trophies/identify and approach (someone employed elsewhere) to fill a business position
Hedgehog:nocturnal insectivorous mammal with a spiny coat and short legs,able to roll itself into a ball for devence
Masai:members of pastoral people living in Tanzania and Kenya
Machine gun:an automatic gun that fires bullets in rapid succession for as long as the trigger is pressed
Naga:a member of a group of peoples living in or near the Naga hills of Burma and NE India
Protect:keep safe from harm or injury
Reality:the state of things as they actally excist,as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them/a thing that is actually experienced or seen/the quality of being lifelike
Red:a colour at the end of the spectrum next to orange and opposite violet,as of blood,fire,or rubies
